HER NOURISHED INTERVIEW

We are super excited about the direction of our forum and cannot wait to keep you updated with the monthly guest speakers, so stay tuned for our October experts! 

In the meantime, though we wanted to introduce you to Krissy from Her Nourished. Some of you already know Krissy from her last live chat, and if you missed it you can go and search for it in our forum. It was such a success and we received so much great feedback, I just knew we needed to lock her in for more. So each month you can expect a live chat with the beautiful Krissy and a toddler recipe plus even a sneaky family meal if she has time. Yay! 

We sat down with Krissy for a quick chat...


ONE - CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY?

We are a family of four living on the Gold Coast. My husband and I moved from New Zealand over seven years ago and we now have two incredible little people in our lives. Our son is almost four years old and our daughter is 16 months old. They are both so different and have a bond with each-other that amazes me each day.

We are also a FIFO (fly in fly out) family, meaning my husband works away and I am solo-parenting in a practical sense a lot of the time. While it can feel challenging at times (especially on 4-week rosters without most of our family close by), we make it work for us and have worked out some strategies to make things a little easier (FaceTime is also amazing!).

TWO - WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO BREAKFAST FOR A BUSY PARENT?

As a busy parent, I completely relate to making sure those around us are happy and fed first and foremost. But as parents our health and wellness matters too, so I encourage breakfast for all!

My go-to breakfast for a busy parent would be something that can be prepared the night before but that still tastes delicious in the morning. Overnight oats are a favourite, followed closely by 3 ingredient pancakes and a delicious smoothie on the go.

My favourite overnight oats combination would have to be these maple pancakes overnight oats!  The kids love them too.

INGREDIENTS

+ ½ cup rolled oats
+ 1 tsp chia seeds
+ 2 tsp toasted coconut chips or coconut flakes
+ 1-2 tsp pure maple syrup (make sure it’s the pure stuff, not maple flavoured syrup)
+ ½ cup unsweetened almond milk or coconut milk

METHOD

+ Layer the ingredients as listed in a clean glass jar;
+ Cover the jar and place in the fridge and allow to soak overnight (or for at least six hours);
+ Stir and eat straight out of the jar with a little fresh fruit.

 

THREE - HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF COOKING?

My cooking style is intuitive, relaxed and fun (most of the time). I often refer to cooking as my modern-day meditation because I can switch off from the World and enjoy the process of putting together a meal or playing with ingredients to create a recipe. I am actually terrible at following recipe instructions! You’ll notice most of my recipes are pretty flexible and reflect my intuitive cooking style. 

I love having the kids in the kitchen with me. Their favourite recipes to make with me are my fail-safe banana bread, healthy cupcakes and wraps. With that being said, I also like to get in and out of the kitchen as quickly as humanly possible (or as quickly as the kids will allow) which is why the majority of my recipes can be made in 30 minutes or less using easy-to-find ingredients.

FOUR - WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO START "HER NOURISHED"?

Without going into too much detail, I speak openly about the fact that I struggled with my relationship with food as a teenager and in my early 20’s. I was then diagnosed with Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and struggled to fall pregnant naturally with my son. This diagnosis, along with my struggles in the past, prompted me to look into what I could do naturally to support fertility and wellness while remaining guided by my specialist.

My background is helping people (Psychology degree) and my passion is nutrition, so I brought the two together in a way that I could share what I’d learnt to support busy mums (or anyone busy) to get nourishing meals on the table in less than 30 minutes while balancing weight in a kind and practical way. 

The Her Nourished motto is to “Strive for nourishment, not perfection”. We are all doing the best we can in the moment we are in.

FIVE - WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOUR MONTHLY LIVE CHATS?

I am SO excited to share some of my favourite recipes for toddlers and busy families and create them live for you! There is nothing quite like seeing exactly how to put together a meal when you’re short on time, and you’ll be able to come back to the live videos and make them with me!

My kids are both so different when it comes to the way they eat so I will share ideas that I’ve found helpful for them and for those I’ve worked with, as well as answer any questions about ingredient substitutions for your favourite recipes.

I’m so excited to chat more each month and help make kitchen-life a little less stressful. You’ve got this!
